Development Process
2050 Carbon Calculator was developed by the United Nations Development Programme - UNDP, as part of the Colombian Strategy low carbon development - ECDBC the Colombian government. This work was supported by the UK Government. For more information about the project, visit the website of UNDP.
The methodology for the development of the components of the calculator had four stages: a) design calculations, b) determining the baseline of the sectors, c) determination of the levels of ambition d) adjusting levels through of workshops with experts.
Before the design calculations Colombia needs were analyzed to adapt the tool from the UK and defined jointly with the Colombian Strategy Low Carbon Development (ECDBC) sectors, components and emissions mitigation measures to be included in the Carbon Calculator 2050. After selecting the components to model the methodology for calculating emissions for each of the components are defined.
Once the calculation methodology and mitigation measures defined for each component was conducted gathering information. At this stage a literature review was conducted searching for information. Additionally, meetings were held with key industry players in order to gather information required for each component.
The third stage (Definition of levels and assumptions) was conducted jointly with experts and ECDBC in regular meetings where cases of the component and the input variables levels, in order to consolidate an initial proposal of assumptions and levels were discussed modeling.
Once defined the first version of the stage levels Settings started levels through the development of nine workshops of experts from various sectors, in order to validate most widely modeling assumptions and inputs of each component . The workshops were conducted with an open key stakeholders from different sectors call.
Following the workshops figures according to the results thereof were adjusted and the information is updated calculator, generating a final version of levels for each component of the sector.
It is important to note that the nature of the tool is dynamic and the Ministry of Environment, Housing and Territorial Development updated when new information useful for any of the sectors of the tool information is presented.
